The Challenge
Wildlife crime remains one of the world’s largest illegal industries, affecting biodiversity, local communities and environmental stability across multiple regions.
Illegal wildlife trade and poaching are often connected to organized criminal networks, corruption, poverty and weak local infrastructure. These challenges place significant pressure on vulnerable ecosystems while also impacting long-term security, sustainability and economic development.
At the same time, wildlife-related crime and illegal hunting are not limited to developing regions alone. In Finland and other Nordic countries, illegal killing of protected predators such as wolves continues to raise concerns among authorities, conservation organizations and researchers, highlighting the complexity of balancing conservation, legislation and local perspectives.
Global demand for wildlife-related products and natural resources also continues to contribute to the exploitation of endangered species and fragile environments.
Long-term solutions require awareness, education, international cooperation and responsible support for conservation efforts and local communities.
